Aghabullogue were unlucky to be defeated by Donoughmore in the first round of the 2009 U21 Hurling Championship. Donoughmore opened the scoring with a point but this was quickly cancelled out with a free from Mark O'Flynn. Donoughmore then added another point before Mark replied again with a great point from play. Donoughmore then added six consecutive points before John Buckley landed a great shot into the Donoughmore net leaving just three points between the sides. Donoughmore finished the scoring of the first half with a point leaving the half time scoreboard read 0-09 to 1-02 in favour of Donoughmore.

The second half was again another close affair, with the first three points coming from the Aghabullogue men, Mark O'Flynn(two) and Denis Quinlan. Donoughmore added another point from play before Mark O'Flynn landed a rasper of a shot from a 21 yard free to the back of the Donoughmore net. Donougmore responded with a goal and three points and Mark O'Flynn added one more point for Aghabullogue from a free. Donoughmore ran out winners in the end on a final scoreline of 2-06 to 1-13.
